Hazing at sea will be the topic of a lively presentation describing sailors’ centuries-old shipboard ceremony for crossing the equator. This illustrated talk by Simon Bronner, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor of American Studies and Folklore at Pennsylvania State University and author of a book on the subject, reveals the sometimes controversial rituals involving role-playing, cross-dressing, initiation rites, and a wild cast of
characters that includes King Neptune, Davy Jones, shellbacks, and pollywogs.
Followed by Q&A and book signing.
